Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken in Bayswater, New Brunswick, Canada

Time

This was shot around mid-morning.

Lighting

I never the lighting much. Though time of day means a lot for me.

Equipment

I used two cameras to get my pics. A canon SX40 and a Canon Rebel T5i. The super zoom of the SX40 worked very well for me.

Inspiration

For two years a followed a couple of families of these birds. I started out by watching where the male was constructing the nest. Keeping my distance and limiting my time, he became accustomed to my being there. I used the same methods as the female moved into the nest. Once the young were in the nest, I gave them even more space for a while. Over two years I managed to shoot close to a hundred shots. For me, it was an amazing experience. All I had to do to get a picture of the young ones was to tap on the tree and they would come to the entrance to pose.

Editing

I only used a very simple free editor to do my post-work. Using the very basics...such as contrast ..saturation and brightness.

In my camera bag

Just my cameras and a telephoto for the T5i

Feedback

A lot of luck and time are the key ingredients to getting pics like this. If there is one thing you must remember...Give the subjects their space especially when on the nest.
