Behind The Lens

Location

Peggy's Cove Nova Scotia Canada

Time

Around 4:30pm...close to sunset as it was taken in the winter.

Lighting

When lighting is an issue I set the camera mode to the Aperture Priority setting. It really depends how much light you have to work with. I've also learned that you should always have your flash with you and a tripod is a must for low lighting situations.

Equipment

I took the picture with my Nikon DS3300 with AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm lens kit that came with the camera.

Inspiration

I originally went there to capture some photos of the crashing waves on the rocks, but lost some prime photo opportunities while cleaning the salt water spray off my lens in my car. Other spectators and photographers had left the area after the waves calmed down. I decided to stay a while longer, walking around the area looking for other things to capture with my camera. While walking around the area I noticed the clouds and the way the sun was hitting the ice on the rocks with the lighthouse in the background. I remember being so excited and happy I stuck around.

Editing

No

In my camera bag

W700HS Cameron Flash, Nikkor 50mm Prime lens, Sigma 18-250mm Macro lens, Polarized lens filters for my lenses and tripod

Feedback

I'm relatively new at photography, as I got this camera for Xmas 2015. It's an affordable/inexpensive camera. The key is to take your camera and go out exploring with it. I used trial and error as my way of learning. Over time you get better with both composition and the technical side of photography. Yes, I would love to have better equipment, but in the end it's about being in the right place at the right time and realizing that sometimes you miss that shot you originally went out for, but if you look around there's always something to photograph .
