Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Grand Canyon National Park. I was inspired by the shadows from the passing clouds and the bright sunlight on the canyon. I'm a travel writer and road trips around America are always on my agenda.

Time

I arrived at the Grand Canyon about 10 A.M. in the morning. This was taken close just before I made my departure around noon. My husband and I were on a 34-day road trip in the Southwest. We visited the Grand Canyon on our honeymoon and again in 2004. As we walked along the new walkways, I saw the clouds quietly slide over the canyon. In contrast, the bright sunlight lit the surrounding rocks and the colors just caught my eye. It took my breath away.

Lighting

I liked the contrast of the areas of shade caused by the clouds passing over and the bright almost noonday sun. It made the colors of the canyon pop out.

Equipment

This was a handheld photo. I use a Sony a7Rii with a FE 3.5-5.6/28-70MM OSS. No flash.

Inspiration

How could anyone be at the Grand Canyon and not be inspired. Every second it can change and look different. I took a lot of photos that day but this is my favorite. I also took a landscape photo of this scene.

Editing

I shoot RAW, so yes, there was post processing. I use Lightroom for that and like to keep it at a minimum. I'm working on getting it right in camera so I don't have much to do in post processing.

In my camera bag

I travel light. I don't like to carry a lot of equipment. I have my Sony and I use the same lens. Hoping to get the new Sony macro lens when it comes out. I do have a Canon and can use the Canon lenses on my Sony with an adapter if I want, but since I'm working on improving my photography this year, I'm shooting with only the kit lens. I carry several tripods and a monopod in my car all the time. I do carry my Samsung Galaxy phone with me for photos also.

Feedback

At the Grand Canyon, the light changes frequently. We passed this area when we first got there and took a couple photos that were similar but the light was different. When we were about to return to the car, we had to pass by again and it just happened. If you have time and can revisited the areas, I would advise that. While almost noon isn't the best time to take photos, the clouds made it a great time to snap this one. I kind of like breaking rules so you won't see me staying inside at noon. I'll be outside finding something the light is striking in a unique way. I plan on visiting again and may be staying so that I can take evening photos. Gives me goosebumps just thinking of the possible photos I could get.
