Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph in my home in New York in our guest room. I chose the guest room because it had a blank wall above the bed, which is exactly what I needed!

Time

This was at night time, as I needed the room to be dark for the shadowy effect.

Lighting

Lighting was absolutely crucial to get this shot, as the concept is shadows. I turned all the lights off in the room and had a strong flashlight pointed at my model's face.

Equipment

My camera is a Nikon d5299. I went pretty rustic with this shoot, as it was many years ago before I had any equipment. I believe I used a flashlight as my main source of light, and did not use a tripod.

Inspiration

This image is one of a series that I completed for my AP photography class many years ago when I was in high school! The theme of the series is that adults are still children at heart, meaning we still experience fear, excitement, joy, and wonder. Each photograph in the series represented a single emotions, this one was fear.

Editing

This photograph required a lot of post processing. I hand drew scary figures and then scanned them into photoshop, where I added them as individual layers to the photograph. I made sure to feather the edges as to ensure they looked like shadows and none of the edges were too harsh.

In my camera bag

I always bring my Nikon d5200, an external flash (and extra batteries!), and a Manfrotto tripod because they are so lightweight.

Feedback

Be creative! Have a strong concept in your head and have a very clear picture of what you want the final outcome to look like.
