Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at our local park, as the first snow fell. I had the urge to go out into the fresh snow and perhaps see something unusual. I am an amateur photographer and only take photos for fun, to entertain myself.

Time

Just as it got dark, the snow started to fall. A wonderful cityscape came to my mind and although it was still snowing, I just had to experience it through and off my lens.

Lighting

At first I wanted to see the people walking through the park, capture their expressions and reactions to the first snow. Maybe some children as well. But the canvas turned out to be more entertaining than the object. At first I wanted to discard the photo, as it seemed underexposed and dull, but I kept playing with it and really liked the final outcome. Especially the way the streetlamps lit up certain branches of the nearby trees.

Equipment

I am a budget photographer :) The picture was taken with a Nikon D3200 and the stock, 18-55 lens with f/22 and a 3.6 apt. I used a tripod, as the camera was not invented for night time shooting. No flash was used, since the light of the streetlamps was what caught my eye.

Inspiration

Definitely the first snow was a major motivator in this case. The way the lights illuminated some branches and how the trees seemed a little alive.

Editing

As I am not yet an acomplished photographer and have only a budget rig, yes, I certainly do PP. In good conditions I try to avoid it if possible, but this photo only came to life because of post processing. I mainly use lightroom and only play with the settings, I do not touch the integrity of the photo.

In my camera bag

My bag consists of the d3200 I own, two lens, a 50mm and the stock 18-55. I carry the flash and spare batteries with me all the time. A few homemade filters are also present and depending on the trip, my monopod or tripod. Also, a snack (no, not next to the rig)

Feedback

I was trying to create an IR-ish feel to the picture, so contrast and the right tint was key. I would like to say it was intentional from the beginning, it wasn't. My advice would be to practice and take too many photographs. When something catches your eye, try to save it, it may turn into something better than expected :) And find fun in it.
