I took this shot of the old Coop's Shot tower in the melbourne central complex during my roadtrip on the west coast of australiaTime
The photo was taken short before midday on a saturday. The mall was very busy and people shopping were looking at us photographer going out of our ways to get the good composition !Lighting
We had a rather busy sky which acted as a giant diffuser, this is why the light coming through the dome is very flat.Equipment
I used my old canon 60D handheld with a 10-22 canon lens, wide open to try and get as much of the dome and tower into the frameInspiration
I loved the contrast between the old and new buidlings, and had read in the guides that the tower was from and old tower saved from demolition. I also found the geometry of the shot very interesting thanks to these straight line pointing to the center of these concentric circles.Editing
I switched it to B&W to emphasize on the geometrical figures and have the dome steel beams act out as a sort of web over the tower. I also reduced a little bit the brightness of the light coming through the dome to get a better light on the tower. In my camera bag
I've changed most of my equipment since the shot was taken ! I now carry my new 7D mII with a tamron 24-70 attached and a canon 70-200 on the side. This is all quite heavy so i tend not to carry a lot more. I'll sometimes take my 50mm with me as well, and some extra cards. I use a belt bag with a strap that i find more convenient to grab the camera quickly than backpacks.Feedback
Don't hesitate to move around and find the best spot for the compisition you want, even if busy people are looking at you wondering why you'd need 10 shots of the same building :) !
