Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while on a pontoon boat ride on the Manatee River at Bradenton, Florida.

Time

This picture was taken just before sunset at about 7:45 p.m. on a summer evening. We had motored out the river toward the Gulf of Mexico. Right after the pontoon turned around to go back up river I was able to get this picture and several other shots of the sunset on the river. of course this was the best of the pictures from that series.

Lighting

The lighting was influenced by the cloud formations and sun in the sky and reflections off the river.

Equipment

I used a Sony HX 200 V camera hand held. While in program mode, the exposure was f5 at 1/1600 second at ISO 200. The lens was set at 106 mm. focal length.

Inspiration

The sky and water were quite colorful. It was not possible to resist the temptation to shoot this picture. The sailboat in the distance gives the picture a sense of depth and motion, as well.

Editing

The photo in the Viewbug files is just as it came off the memory card. One form I printed the picture I put the words of Tennyson in the water in the dark area on the lower right. The passage begins, "Sunset and evening star,..." That form of the picture has been used to memorialize a several residents of our retirement home who have died.

In my camera bag

Not long after the pontoon boat trip I gave the camera to my granddaughter and bought a Sony HX 400V. Often when I go on a brief excursion the camera is all I take. Both the HX 200 V and the HX 400 V have served me well in my attempt to keep it simple. The range of the lens on the bridge camera covers the range of several expensive lenses on my Canon. When the occasion demands I will take the more complex Canon EOS T6s and a couple of lenses, otherwise the Sony has nearly the same resolution as the Canon and the simplicity allows me to concentrate on the subject and composition of the shots I am taking.

Feedback

Basically taking this type of photo is a matter of being at the right location at the time the light is just right. In this instance it was a matter of chance. When setting out to take a specific shot with just the right light, carefully work out the time you need to be there and be prepared to wait until all the elements come together. Rarely do you walk into a scene, fire off a few shots and get the very dramatic frame you wanted.
