Behind The Lens

Location

The owl landed in our palm tree in the garden and I was very lucky to have seen it .

Time

It was around midnight when I just happened to glimpse a sight of his wing which caused me to investigate further and I was thrilled to discover this little owl

Lighting

To get the warmer lighting, I had my partner shine a torch up on the bird to illuminate him. Thankfully the invasive torch light shining on him didn't result in him flying away and he sat there for a short while allowing me to get this photo

Equipment

Canon 700d and a macro canon lens. On camera flash. Handheld image

Inspiration

Where I live we hear the owls at night but very rarely see them. I felt it was a once in a life time opportunity and I was really thrilled with the result. I enjoy bird photography. As an amateur photographer I am keen to take photos of any opportunity that comes my way as I feel it's an important part of my learning process.

Editing

Removed the red eye which was a result of the flash used and cropped the photo. Sharpened the image and enhanced the colour

In my camera bag

Normally I just take camera and what ever lens is attached. In my camera bag I have lens cleaning kit stuff and my other lenses. Occasionally on a longer trip I take my bag to give me a better range of choice

Feedback

Being an amateur and still very much in the learning phase, all I can suggest is to try and control your excitement when something out the ordinary happens and presents an unexpected opportunity, as a calm person, will always get a more stable and sharper photo than one who is excited
