Location
The Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco is one of my favorite places. This photo was taken walking toward Haight Street in the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco just after viewing the house Charles Manson and some of his followers lived in in 1967. This was part of a musical tour of the 60's era in that neighborhood.Time
This was taken around 2 pm at the end of a walking musical tour of the Haight.Lighting
I used the available lighting. This was street photography. Just captured the moment as is.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5300 with a Nikkor 18-300mm lens. Handheld.Inspiration
For several hours we had been wandering the Haight, listening to music, singing, and being free. We had immersed ourselves in the history of the Summer of Love and its aftermath. It had been a marvelous and magical few hours and I was so struck by how the street art and the women's hair and bandana and our tour guide's hat and guitar just seemed to sum up the spirit of that entire afternoon.Editing
I bumped up the exposure and brought more of the highlights back in. I tend not to do much post-processing if I can help it.In my camera bag
I travel a lot. I travel with a Nikon D750 and a Nikon D5300. I use a Nikkor 18-300mm, 70-300mm, 50mm, and for wildlife a 200-500mm lens. I always have a polarizing filter with me, extra cards (love Delkin Black SD cards), and plenty of charged batteries.Feedback
I do a lot of travel, street, documentary, and wildlife photography. That may seem like a very diverse range of subject matter but really, at their very heart, they are very much the same in that you are capturing the truth and spirit of a moment as it happens. You have to be ready. You have to be watching. You have to be lying in wait for that magic moment that captures the essence of your experience in that second or nanosecond of time. Have your camera at the ready and be the ultimate participant observer.
