This photo is taken on Duncan Street in Toronto, ON Canada, which was where I worked at the time.Time
This is something I had been walking past for days thinking, “This has potential to be a great photo”, but the conditions were never quite right. One night, as I was leaving work the rain and snow had just ended and suddenly I could see great reflections from the street and the side walk. It was late December, around 5pm, just as darkness was falling.Lighting
There was a contrast of different light sources; the sconces highlighting the side of the building, the row of street lights, and the perfect moment of disappearing daylight. They reflected so nicely on the wet sidewalk. All of these coming together really made this photo one I enjoy looking back on.Equipment
Believe it or not, just my Google Nexus 5 camera phone. I’d left my “good” camera at home (see below).Inspiration
I rushed past this spot in a hurry to get home from work every day over a couple of weeks, and the image of the coloured sconces on building always caught my eye. The night I took the photo I happened to have a little more time to stop with my phone and snap off a quick couple of shots on the way by. It wasn’t until I got home that I realized that the photos had come out better than I’d imagined.Editing
I used a couple of in-camera edits that allowed me to smooth out the edges, and uploaded it to my cloud for later. When I got home I used an editing tool to clean up the sky and remove a small corporate logo that I felt took away from the beauty of the image. In my camera bag
At the time I had a Panasonic DMC-FZ300, but have since traded it in for a Olympus E-M5 series one (mirrorless system). I have been shooting with a 40mm-150mm 4-5.6f.Feedback
The best advice I can give is some that I received from a friend – and it’s a bit of a cliché for a reason – the best camera is the one that you have with you. Keep your head up and your eyes open, because you never know when an image will catch your attention, or when something that you see all the time might come into a different light.
