Behind The Lens

Location

I would love to say that i "spent days and nights" researching this location, but i can't. It's part of the major A75 Euroroute through South West Scotland that links the ferry from Ireland to the English border. I had started taking my camera and tripod "in case i get a chance somewhere" and struck lucky with this shot.

Time

As it was taken in early January 2015, and as i work the late shift delivering shopping to customers had some "down time", it was around 7:45pm. Had the mist not been present, i don't think the shot would've been as good.

Lighting

Not much to say about lighting, other than used the street lights as my main source.

Equipment

My trusted 3 year old (at the time) Nikon D3100 with standard 18-55mm kit lens. Along with a tripod, which i had luckily packed for the shift, and a cable release. After trying different Shutter speeds, ISO and Aperture settings; a 6 Second Exposure at F/25 and 400 ISO seemed to work well

Inspiration

Practice and to try a different shooting style. With my job, i never know how busy i'm going to be, so had been carrying it for weeks without any chance of shooting anything

Editing

Since attending a College Course, my editing routine has almost disappeared. The only things i do (in RAW) was set the white balance to DAYLIGHT. Why? I don't know is the honest answer. it's just something that i've been doing since the course as i like to shoot IN CAMERA rather than crop later. Once it was opened in Photoshop ELEMENTS, brought the WHITE point in, opened the MID point, and brought the BLACK point in.Then resized it to A4 size with the border. Again, something i had learned on my College course. Although, on my recent work, i have left out the white border.

In my camera bag

I don't have a lot of equipment, so it is ALL kept in my bag, a smallish Duragadget rucksack type of thing. My D3100, 18-55mm standard KIT lens, a 55-200mm zoom lens, flash, cable release. I also have a tripod and monopod, however, these are only taken out when i need to use them.

Feedback

What i call 3 P's. Practice. Patience, Perseverance. If you see an image you like, think about how to take it then go out and practice. Your first, second, third effort may not work, but learn from the shot before. Is it to Dark, are the Highlights blown, etc? Once you know whats wrong and how to get the correct result, make changes you'll get the shot eventually. You may spend an hour at a spot on Monday and the timings could be wrong, or no cars may pass at the same time. Go on Tuesday, you could get it after just 5 mins. Pick a road that you can be safely close enough to the action, but far enough away to not put yourself in a dangerous place. Also a High Vis Vest/Jacket is essential. As i had my back to oncoming traffic i had to ensure that i was seen and kept watching the traffic flow BOTH ways to get the timing right.
