The photo was taken while on holiday at Kapama Game Reserve in Hoedspruit, South Africa.Time
We had to get up early for the morning game drive. We were on our way to an open area for our morning coffee, the sun was just rising and the giraffe stopped in the road in front of us and looked straight at the camera.Lighting
Because the giraffe has such a unique profile, I wanted that to be in silhouette against the golden light of the sunrise and therefor used the background light to determine the exposure of the photo.Equipment
I used a SONY DSLR-A200 with an 18-70mm lens.Inspiration
I love the African bush and I love photographing the sunrise (something about a new day and new possibilities), but after a while it can get boring, so I try to look for ways to make the photograph interesting and to stand out.Editing
I usually do some post processing, but in this case it was not necessary. For this photo everything worked out perfectly. In my camera bag
I normally use my Sony Alpha A200 DSLR. The two lenses always in my bag is my Sony 18-70mm and my Tamron 70-300mm lenses. The Tamron lens has a Macro function on 180-300mm. With these two lenses I can take all the photos I usually want to take.Feedback
It is definitely worth it to get up early (before sunrise) because you never know what the sunrise will look like. Plan your shot - composition and lighting. If I'm not sure about either, I usually take a couple of shots with different settings and compositions as scenes like this don't usually come along every day. Look at your surroundings and see if there are any objects that will make interesting silhouettes and change your position to include them.
