Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at Duke Chapel at Duke University in Durham, North CarolinaTime
The chapel image was taken during the late afternoon, which allowed for the interesting light contrast due to the angle of the sun.Lighting
When I took this image, I knew I wanted to capture the magnificent contrast between the shadows and light.Equipment
To take this image, I used my iPhone camera because I had forgotten my real camera in the car. Fortunately the image turned out well.Inspiration
After viewing some images of the Duke Chapel, I decided i would try to take a few while visiting. Old architecture is interesting and can make a great subject.Editing
For this photo, I merely upped contrast and converted to black and white in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I typically carry with me a 300mm prime lens which is great for wildlife photography and close ups. My landscape lens is a 18-55mm Pentax kit lens. iPhones can be good for panoramas or images where you can't get far enough away to use your smallest lenses because of their extremely short focal length (4mm). I most likely wouldn't have been able to capture this image at 18mm. I also carry a tripod and ND filters and use a Pentax K-3 camera.Feedback
Old architecture and other buildings can be great for photography because they don't really go anywhere and you can go back to take pictures of them many times, improving your images each time. If you plan out how you want your image to look ahead of shooting, you can plan what time of day would supply the best light for your image. In this case it was mid afternoon so the light would enter this walkway and still have contrast with the roof. Symmetry is another thing to pay attention to in architecture photography and can help create an interesting image.
