Location
The photo was taken from a bridge that crosses over to Killarney Castle, Co. Kerry (known as the garden of Ireland). It was right on the border of summer and Autumn, raining and a little cool. Kerry really is an endless opportunity for wonderful photography is you can get there in the right conditions.Time
As we were out wild camping in our camper, we had decided to skip breakfast and have an early lunch instead. The early lunch became a late lunch and I was getting quite grumpy because of the lack of food! However as we crossed over into Killarney Castle I spotted the boats and had to take the shot. At this stage is was 14:30, starving I soldiered on and hobbled back to the bridge on my crutches and captured the image.Lighting
The lighting was terrible, I had no equipment and it was dull and raining. But it was bright enough to collect enough detail.Equipment
Oh how I wish I had a camera! My wife had knocked my camera off the counter top and it decided to stop communicating with my lens, so of for repairs it went. I used my smart phone, a Samsung Galaxy S5 which in fairness has a pretty nice camera built in. I then quickly built a Tripod using stone and mortar, well, I used a wall to rest the phone on.Inspiration
As I said earlier, we were out on a road trip in our camper. I was nursing a broken leg so I was a passenger for the 6 days and it was bliss! I did get some dirty looks thrown at me now and then of the course on the journey with my 'stop here, pull over there', but it was worth it. It's because I was a passenger I spotted the river and boats, I really think I would not have seen them had I been driving.Editing
The image was imported into lightroom and some adjustments made on the contrast and colour vibrance. It's a couple of years now since I did it so I don't have the exact details but I wanted to make the colours pop as they would have if I had better light. In my camera bag
First of all I've learned this year that I need a new bag! Why, well I spotted a nice messenger style bag that I really liked but it was not a camera bag, so onto ebay and I was able to buy a foam insert with dividers, worked great! right up until I got my second hand Sigma 70 - 200mm 2.8 (which I love), then I realised how old I'm getting! When out on long walks the messenger bag puts a lot of strain on my back leading to pain and forcing me to give in earlier than I like to! So I'm currently shopping for a backpack with proper support. The body I use and truly love is the Canon 6D, I just can't fault it, next on the importance list is my nifty 50 1.8 and lastly the kit lens that came with the camera, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6, not the greatest lens in the world but it's the only wide angle lens I have. Last but definitely not least is my Tripod, comes everywhere with me. Small items include ND filters, remote (rarely used because I use the wifi and phone app with the 6D),spare batteries and cloths.Feedback
Go in the depths of winter on a clear day and the sun is low in the sky and parallel with the river, if you can catch it with a bit of frost even better. A wet suit or whalers and get in the river for a lower angle. That's my plan anyway ;)
