This picture was taken at home - my lounge was converted into a studio for the day. I'm a self taught photographer so I love to spend time experimenting. This was originally a full face portrait, but I love creative close cropping, and thought it looked really good to crop down about 50% of the original to leave half of the face as the subject.Time
I'm sure this was the afternoon. I think I'd spent a couple of hours experimenting with self portraits before getting this one.Lighting
The full shot used single light, almost rembrandt style, you can see the catch light in my eye, and the cropped side has all the shadows. For this shot though, as it was quite shallow depth of field, I preferred to use the lit side.Equipment
Shot in a Canon 60D with EF 70-200mm F4L USM lensInspiration
I was just looking to do a shallow depth of field b&w self portrait. Spent a couple of hours experimenting with lighting, aperture and cropping.Editing
Really not much processing on this one, just a de-saturisation and tweaks to contrast etc - usual b&w adjustments. In my camera bag
At the moment I have my Canon 60D, 70-200mm F4 L, 24-70 F4 L, 50mm F1.8, 100m macro lenses.Feedback
Keep experimenting! I moved the lighting so many times just to see how it affected my face, changed the zoom to compare close crop with full face etc - and had to play with the autofocus to make sure it got my eye. Tricky when you're working on your own, but you'll get there!
