Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the deck of a boat in the San Francisco Bay during Fleet Week in October 10, 2010.

Time

This exhibition was given by the US Coast Guard at 1:00 pm. The day was amazingly beautiful and calm. The weather in the San Francisco bay can be questionable at any time due to the currents and wind.

Lighting

We were very lucky this year that there was no fog for this Fleet week. Some years the wind and fog are pretty horrible because of the time of year. Fall in San Francisco bay is usually very windy, foggy and the water is pretty choppy. On this particular occasion we were blessed with a beautifully sunny day with sporadic clouds. Depending on the location of the events and plane locations the harshness of the sun could benefit or hinder me.

Equipment

Panasonic DMC-FZ30, F/5.6 Exposure time 1/800 sec, ISO-100, Focal Length 61mm, Max apeture 3, no flash.

Inspiration

My grandfather was a retired as an E-9 in the Coast Guard and I have always been proud of his service. I love taking photographs of the military exhibiting the skills they have learned and know to keep us safe.

Editing

The only thing I did was crop the photograph.

In my camera bag

I still have my Panasonic but I mostly use a Canon ESO Rebel SL1, Canon 18-55mm Promaster, Canon 28-135mm Ultrasonic, Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8, monopod, tripod and remote control.

Feedback

My honest advise is shoot what you love, what you see each day. Your yard, the path you walk, your local town, your family and friends. I personally believe that the love of what we enjoy shows through our photographs. Never give up! If the first 10 times the shot you want doesn't turn out the way you envisioned it, shoot it again. Sometimes you will find you get a better shot than the one you saw in your imagination. Most of all have FUN!
