Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at Bristol Zoo on the first date with my now fiancée

Time

Before lunchtime I had a little time to kill before the zoo got really busy, and after spending around 15 minutes waiting for this lion to roar so I could get a shot with him showing his teeth, I settled for a moody portrait. Perfect pre lunch photography

Lighting

The lighting couldn't have been more perfect! The sun was behind me and shining directly on the subject. After seeing the shot on my computer I decided it would carry much more emotion with a touch of monochrome

Equipment

This was shot on my canon 600d using a tamron 70-300mm at full length

Inspiration

Everyone loves a photo of the King of the jungle! This guy was literally posing just for us photographers

Editing

The colour of the enclosure and the lion itself made for a very "cartoon" looking shot, so I took a lot of the saturation out to give a light mono effect

In my camera bag

My bag usually has my camera body (now a 70d) with the kit lens, a 50mm prime and a telephoto lens for those shots where you just can't get close enough! I also carry various filters, spare batteries, a speed light spare memory cards, a bottle of water and paracetamol! Nothing worse than shooting with a killer headache!

Feedback

Animals are always a little unpredictable so a lot of shooting wildlife is luck of the draw. I would have to say being in the right place at the right time is a big factor... As is a little patience and willing to keep revisiting the same area/idea until you get the shot you are happy with
