Behind The Lens

Location

This is the first sunset photo we had ever taken. It was taken about a mile from our house on a lonely country road in McCord Oklahoma. My wife & I took it while out on a very cold December day, and then I did the processing. We had a lot of fun doing so, and learned a lot.

Time

It was taken during the "Golden Hour", there was a bad storm coming in and ?the weather was turning ugly fast. 22 ?December, ?2015, ??17:19:00

Lighting

There were hints of pink and gold showing in the horizon with ominous skys providing a stark contrast. During processing we discovered a ethereal "gap" in the roadway as it lead into the clouds. Being it was winter the blue/gray of the sky against the browns of the grass made it a very ominous feeling. The light was changing very fast so we had to be very steady yet quick with our composition.

Equipment

We had just gotten out first DSLR. A Nikon D3300 with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. @ 40mm f/5. 1/60 sec. WB was set to auto area and iso: 500 and not the least My wifes wonderful eye for composition.

Inspiration

We had just gotten the camera and wanted to get a feel for what it could do and if we would enjoy taking photography to the next level. We love living in the country and the leading lines made us feel like we were taking an endless adventure. The weather was changing very rapidly and we could FEEL the dread coming. The skys against the stark countryside gave us the same feeling.

Editing

I run all my images through Adobe Lightroom and then do final touch-ups in Photoshop. I really like the Google Nik Silver FX plugin and use that to help bring out the hidden structure and details in the image. I added a bit of dehazing as I really like how it adds to the clarity of most images. For this image I set the camera profile to landscape.

In my camera bag

I never know what I'm going to need to I take pretty much everything with me. I have the D3300, the dual kit lenses ( 18-55 and 55-200 ) a spare battery, full set of nd & close up filters as well as a circular polarizer and UV filter. ( I rarely use the filters anymore ). I keep a lens cleaning pen, cleaning cloth, infrared remote, lens hood also. Often I'll take my tripod with me but not always.

Feedback

ALWAYS take your bag. Even if its just to the doctor's office. Some of the funnest photo's I've taken have been spur of the moment sightings. Especially sunsets like this. The light fades VERY fast. You can actually watch it minute by minute change. Take LOTS of shots as often in processing you'll discover that its not the 1st shot that you love the most. It's not uncommon for me to come home with 100 shots of a single sunset. I then cull the really bad ones , then more critically examine the remainder this time being more picky about focus, shadows, and over all aesthetics. This is also when I will start rating and "picking" the images. Then I've got a basis to start processing to create the magic I saw through the lens. Noise in a sky will ruin the image so be sure to use a tripod if you can with Vibration Reduction OFF! Using a remote shutter control helps prevent finger induced motion blur.
