I took this photo of Alice Cooper in concert at the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis on October 5, 2015. This is an iconic old theatre In Indy that still hosts great shows. This shot came from off center in the 5th row.Time
This was an indoor concert at night. All of the lighting was stage lighting and spit lights.Lighting
Alice's shows have a lot of bright lighting if you can get close enough to get into it. The lighting here in the background shows some of the awesome props that lend to the theme of the show. I converted this shot to black and white to capture some of the macabre aspects of Alice Coopers show.Equipment
For concerts I like to use my Sony NEX7 camera with a stock Sony 55-200mm zoom lense. The NEX7 is compact and easy to conceal getting into a show and has a very fast burst rate to capture the action. I like that my Sony NEX7 works reasonably well in low light.Inspiration
I love concert photography. I have done it since high school in one way or another but never as a credentialed photographer. That is a dream for me. Alice Cooper had a lot of action, interaction, and showmanship in his shows and I tried to capture some of that in this shot. The stance of Alice with his cane held up and microphone pointed to the audience was a cool moment for me. I thought he was looking at me.Editing
I converted the shot to black and white in NIK Silver Efex to give it some mood. Rob Fenn is a pro I admire who uses similar black and whites in concert photography. I wanted to give black and white a try here.In my camera bag
I normally carry a Canon 5dr and a Sony A7r2 as well as the Sony NEX7. I pretty much either go with the Canon when I'm doing something for product literature at work or nature and the Sony equipment for sports and concerts. I have a ton of Canon lenses. I only have the 55-200 and a 16mm fo the NEX7. Ihave a 24-70 f4 full frame and a 24-240 5.6 for my A7r2.Feedback
Get as close as possible. I've never been able to get credentials to shoot a show. To be honest I haven't tried real hard. If you want to get good shots, you need to be up close and in the light. If you are any more than 5 rows back, there are too many people with cell phones up in your way. So in closing, buy the best seats you can and get close or get credentials. Also, shoot as wide open as the light will, allow you. If your camera will handle higher ISO do it. I try to get sharp shots as much as possible. A lot of light is needed to get them.
