Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo of my cat Theodore as he gazed out the living room window at the birds.Time
This shot was taken in the late afternoon as the sun was beginning to lower.Lighting
The lighting was filtered through the curtains and I just knew that I had to capture this moment.Equipment
Most photos that I take are with my Sony a-5100 mirrorless. This photograph however was taken with with my iPhone 5C. My feeling is that a beautiful image is a beautiful image no matter how it's captured.Inspiration
The inspiration for this photo was truly the depth of Theodore's eyes. Because of the way the natural lighting played against his iris, there was a depth displayed that reflected on his character. That was the moment I didn't want to miss.Editing
As this photo was taken prior to the purchase of my 'grown up' Sony a-5100, I simply used an app on my phone, Aviary, to do the post edits on this image. This particular one I chose a black and white format, added some clarity to the foreground, especially around Theodore's eye, and I chose to add a vignette to darken the background. I really wanted to draw the focus of the viewer to be drawn into the eyes of the cat. Now I run lost edits through Lightroom. In my camera bag
I now carry my Sony a-5100 around with me, honestly, just about everywhere. The benefit of having a mirrorless camera is that I don't have to lug big, heavy equipment everywhere. It's truly versatile and allows for quick response time when I'm inspired to capture a moment. I have the kit lens, 18-55mm, but I also use my 50mm prime lens as a constant go to. I have a Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS Lens which has been great to capture shots from a further distance back. Along with the basic camera cleaning equipment, as long as I have those pieces, I'm pretty comfortable in most situations. I also have a tripod for stability should I need it.Feedback
My recommendation is that you look for a photo taking opportunity wherever you turn. You'd be surprised at just how many opportunities you really 'stumble' across. I try to keep my mind in the place of wonder so as not to miss out on a great photograph. You never really know what you have until you're behind the lens, but sometimes you will capture magic. Just give yourself the opportunity to do so.
