Location
This photo was taken on Hunting Island State Park in Beaufort, South CarolinaTime
After considering the low tide time, clear skies, and moon set time. The perfect time for shooting this area was all about the "stars aligning" for perfect conditions to shoot at this location. This shot was roughly taken around 12:30am.Lighting
Hunting Island is a perfect location to do night time shooting due to very low light pollution. Although the stars light up the sky, the Tree was my main focus point. During a 30 second exposure, a flash light was used to light paint the tree for about 4 seconds to achieve the highlight on the tree.Equipment
This image was taken with my Nikon D610 while using my Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 lens and a tripod.Inspiration
A fellow photographer friend and I have been trying to shoot at night together for a very long time. This particular night our schedules worked to were we both could go exploring out on the beach in the middle of the night. This spot on the beach has been hit badly by beach erosion. The "Peace Tree" has held on and stood tall against Mother Nature's tries at bring it down. When I first saw the tree, I was inspired by its strength.Editing
During post-processing, I adjusted the noise first, added clarity, and played with the color saturations until the tree "popped".In my camera bag
Right now my go to equipment is my Nikon D610, paired with my Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 lens.Feedback
When wanting to shoot at night, the first thinking you'll need to check is light pollution. Beaches are perfect to shoot at night, but the tides can be your biggest challenge. So double check the tide charts. I also take in to concideration that the moon faze will the effect the water levers as well. As far as the light painting, take different flash lights with different light strength. Play around with exposure times along with the amount of time you use the flashlight during each exposure. The possibilities are endless!
