Original underwater hippo photo was taken through a window at the San Diego Zoo. Image was altered in the app RePix and also PicMonkey. It is being posted Dec. 15, and thus the title was suggested by a vintage Christmas song. Enjoy!

Behind The Lens

Location

The original photo was taken at the San Diego Zoo in November, 2009.

Time

Time of day was about 5:30 pm.

Lighting

Lighting was primarily from overhead, into the tank of water.

Equipment

My camera at the time was the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18. No tripod. o flash.

Inspiration

I had never seen a completely submerged hippopotamus before! The tank enclosure at the San Diego Zoo offered this wonderful opportunity if you were there at the right place, right time!

Editing

Oh yes... this image is primarily about post processing! The original image was filled with distracting water debris and scratches on the tank's glass. It was originally edited using the RePix app on my Kindle Fire, "daub effect". I thought this particular effect gave a watery feel and nicely eliminated the distracting debris and scratches. The original image was more of an intense blue. To achieve more color variation, I converted to black & white in PicMonkey and then added back blue color with an ombre effect.

In my camera bag

I have long since since replaced the trusty Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150, and the mft format interchangeable lens Panasoniv Lumix GX8 with Panasonic 35-100 lens.

Feedback

Never be afraid to experiment with apps and effects! The original image is often just the start of the artistic process. Even though professional editing programs (such as Photoshop and LightRoom) can be intimidating at times, there are other, user-friendly apps and programs available to assist even a beginner's creative process while keeping your original file intact. For a b/w version of the original, please browse my more recent gallery uploads! Enjoy!
