Location
This photo was taken behind my house on a small and calm pond. The wood in the picture is a dock that has fallen apart.Time
I woke up one morning, saw the fog, and raced to grab my camera and go to the pond. Once there, I noticed how perfect the reflection was, and how the fog created a mysterious yet peaceful effect. I was entranced and fell in love with the juxtaposition of the dried flowers, trees in the background, and the broken down dock.Lighting
I really love to use natural light in my pictures; the foggy morning created the perfect natural light that I wanted to use to set the mood for this picture. I did not use a flash or any artificial light sources.Equipment
I have an old digital camera that takes surprisingly good pictures; I used the Sony Cybershot 5 MP with its attached lens, no tripod, and no flash. The entire photo taking process was very natural, which is another reason I like this image; everything came together so perfectly and spontaneously.Inspiration
I really had no inspiration; this picture was completely spontaneous and unplanned. I saw the fog from my house and knew that I wanted to play around with the fog and reflection, so I grabbed the camera and went down. The fog over the pond on a cold morning was my main motivation; it captivated me instantly.Editing
I use an app called VSCO to enhance my pictures. I used a slight filter just to enhance the natural color. I did not edit the white balance, exposure, contrast, etc. (For more of my work, check out my vsco: www.ebrummer.vsco.co)In my camera bag
I always carry my Sony Alpha 6000 as well as my Sony 55-210 mm lens. I will pack additional cameras depending on where I am going, but that is my go-to camera. I also carry a portable charger and the batteries, in case things go south;). I also bring my portable tripod and remote in case I feel it is necessary. I try not to bring too much unnecessary equipment; I like to travel light.Feedback
If I had one piece of advice for capturing photos like this, I would say to be spontaneous- if you are in a location that just really inspires you, take out your camera and capture it. I never predicted that I would like this picture so much, but it has turned into one of my favorites. If you are specifically looking for a foggy area, check the weather and plan ahead (unlike I, who literally woke up and took this picture :D) Try to get up early to get better reflection pictures, since bodies of water tend to get wavy during the day if birds or boats disturb the water.
