I found this nest with four Northern Mockingbird chicks in the rubber plant right by my backyard window. These poor souls were in the midday sun when I stumbled upon the nest. I was amazed the adults had built a nest so close to my window but it became a source of frustrating entertainment for my indoor cat who had a prime view of all the feedings.Time
I had gone into the yard to weed when I stumbled upon this very visible nest and was concerned about the hot sun directly on these chicks as it was about noon and in Florida the temperature was around 96 degrees!Lighting
This isn't a good shot because of the direct sunlight and because back then I had no idea how to edit photos. So it is what it is, not sure why this was chosen as behind the lens, but it is candid!Equipment
I believe this will have been taken with an old Nikon D3300 with the regular lens - no tripod or paraphernaliaInspiration
I was so shocked to find this nest this is NOT a good photo; subsequent photos of the chicks and the nest are much better quality than this one. Who wouldn't want to take a picture of a nest with 4 chicks right outside their window! The whole month was a complete delight, with the many feeding by both parent birds. My cat was so completely transfixed she had her own Nature TV program; she would sit all day with tail wagging side to side! Moonbeam and I felt quite bereft when the young grew and fledged, but what a great experience!Editing
No, its not a good photo and at that time I had no idea how to post-process (I've come on a bit since then). Subsequent photos of this same nest and chicks are much better in my opinion. In my camera bag
I do not carry any equipment as I take photos 'on the hoof' ... I've got better and better over the years as I begin to understand lighting, a good shot, and I believe in the 4 L's. Love, Lighting, Location & Luck.Feedback
My advise is first have the dedication, passion and the love of photography without that, it won't happen for you. Then, practice, practice, practice. Never let the camera determine the composition of your photo. That comes from inside you. Be a part of nature and love what you shoot. You will begin to see good shots everywhere and in every situation. Don't fall into the trap of believing you need to be a camera expert. Just take photos that bring you joy, that you love love and that you desire to share: beauty is all around and within you (its not in the bag full of camera tricks). IMHO.
