Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Somersby Falls near Gosford. There are a series of waterfalls throughout the trail with this particular one being the last. I didn't know about this waterfall until 2 other photographers had mentioned it to me. To me, it's the best one out of them all and my favourite.

Time

This was taken late afternoon, around 4pm. I remember walking down the trail and my legs wanting to give out every now and then, I was starting to get tired but I was really keen on seeing this waterfall. As soon as I arrived, I didn't want to leave. The conditions were perfect and I knew I had to make the most of it too because I didn't know when I would return. The walk back up to the top was a mission too haha

Lighting

The lighting conditions were perfect - it was overcast and misty. Generally I perfer to shoot waterfalls on an overcast day as it provides softer light (as oppose to harsh light on a clear day). There was no need for further light such as an external flash or torch, there was enough being reflected off the water.

Equipment

I shot this with the Canon 5D mark 2 with the Canon 16-35mm wide angle lens and a tripod.

Inspiration

I love shooting waterfalls or anything water related. What i find with waterfalls is that there is either a sense of power or tranquility (especially this one being that it's tucked away) and it was that tranquility element that I wanted to portray through this image. I was also drawn to the reflection off the water puddles, the leading lines and the branches surrounding the waterfall.

Editing

Landscape photography will require post processing (some more than others). This image didn't require too much. There were adjustment made to the brightness/contrast and some colour correction.

In my camera bag

Aside from the Canon 5D mark 3 I never leave home without my trusty Canon 16-35mm wide angle lens. Depending on the location or subject will depend on what I pack. Sometimes I'll carry the 50mm prime to experiment as well as the Sigma 50-500mm. Other accessories that I will pack is a remote, lens cloth, Graduated ND filters and a torch. I will also pack water and snacks just in case.

Feedback

My advice would be to arrive at your location early and look around the area and see what grabs your interest. Try to look for a subject or leading lines, reflections that you would think will make the shot work. There is nothing worse than trying to rush a shot so it's important to have some patience as well.
