In my area, getting to see a Black-crowned night heron is a bit of a rare treat. Getting to see one up close, is on the rare side. Getting a shot of one up close is nearly unheard of. Who knew I needed to go to a zoo to see one!?
At the San Diego, CA zoo, they are considered opportunistic feeders. They are not actually part of the zoo, but will fly in to find food leftovers. As timid as I am used to them being, this one had no fear at all while we were shooting a few feet away.
