Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at my house in my living room. My husband and I were watching a movie and I looked down and he was sleeping like this with his head hanging off of the edge of the ottoman. The angle his head was laying at with the light shining on just sucked me in. I had to get a shot of it.

Time

It was mid afternoon on a sunny winter day. I remember this because the ottoman he was laying on is next to a large picture window that doesn't normally get any direct sunlight shining in through it. On this day the sunlight was reflecting off of a fresh blanket of snow into the window. It showed every little detail and texture.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural and perfect. Honestly, I don't think any artificial light could have made this shot any better. Once I saw him sleeping with his head hanging off the first thing I noticed was how the light coming in through the window made it seem like you could see every individual hair.

Equipment

In all honesty I shot this with my iPhone 6. I use an app called Pro Camera which enables me to capture RAW images. I was too scared to move and wake him up and it was all I had close at the time. I don't think you always need an expensive camera to capture amazing images. Is it nice? Yes it is, as I am learning, but not always necessary.

Inspiration

It's an angle you don't normally see and his white whiskers made a stark contrast against the dark background. I knew when I saw him laying there in that position it would make a beautiful black and white shot. I could see it clear as day in my head and wanted to capture it just as I saw it. I didn't hesitate and I'm glad of that because almost instantly after taking it he stetched and repositioned himself.

Editing

I used the Snapseed app I have on my phone to tweak it a little. It's my absolute favorite for anything I capture with my phone. I changed it from color to black and white. I also bumped up the contrast just a tad to make the whiskers and texture of his fur pop a little more. That's about it.

In my camera bag

I've always just had a point and shoot or my iPhone. My husband recently purchased a Nikon D5200 with both a 55mm and 105 mm lens for me. I am having a lot of fun learning to use it and I am excited about the creative possibilities that it will open for me. I am eager to have more control over how I want to capture the images I see all around me.

Feedback

For me it's just looking at the plain old everyday things and seeing them in a new light. Everything can become more interesting from another angle or in different lighting. It's about taking something ordinary and seeing it as extraordinary.
