Behind The Lens

Location

I saw this butterfly while driving with a friend down a back road. I told him to stop so I can take this photo while it was close to the road. meanwhile the butterfly went down through the field that was overgrown with weeds and thorns for years, I took off after it. It finally sat on this flower about waist high and I got several good pictures of it. I still tell my buddy about the butterfly that took me down through the field when we drive by that spot. We have had a few laughs about that one.

Time

It was a little after noon on a overcast day in the summer.

Lighting

The lighting was overcast and I didn't use any flash to enhance the picture. I saw that it didn't need any lighting when I looked at the preview.

Equipment

I was using a Pentax K-50 at the time. I since switched to a Nikon D-5500. I like a 18 to 105 lens or a lens that is 18 to somewhere around 100. That is good all around lens for landscape and most animal shots at mid range. I also like the 70 to 300 longer ranges. I mostly don't use a tripod as most of my pictures are done while I am walking or I see and shoot.

Inspiration

I love to shoot wildlife and landscapes. This is one that I saw that I really liked and wanted, so I went for it.

Editing

I used a little to bring it back into sharpness, but it was very little.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikor flash, 40mm micro, 85mm micro, 70-300 Nikor lens, 70-250 Sigma lens, battery charger, tape recorder, and ring flash. Also cleaning supplies.

Feedback

Patience and if you really want the shot do what you have to as long as it is safe for you as well as the subject. The subject will always come back if you don't hurt it or really scare it, most of the time. Animals are creatures of habit. The only time that this rule doesn't come into effect is if they are migrating, then things are different. Get whatever shot you can get.
