Location
It was a dim still day at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge, MD.Time
It was a very still day and this shot was mid morning.Lighting
I didn't have high hopes for the lighting, as the forecast called for overcast conditions. There was zero wind and the light increased but was not super strong for this shot.Equipment
I had rented a lens I was looking at the Sigma 15-600mm C and had that on my Canon T5i body. Handheld with perhaps some stabilization from the window frame of the car.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this photo because I love the Great Blue Heron and when I turned a corner and saw this guy perfectly reflected in the water, I knew I would take several shots at the location.Editing
I applied a bit of contrast to the photo and adjusted the levels a bit.In my camera bag
As I shoot long shots of wildlife, I carry my T5i with the Sigma 15-600mm Contemporary lens most of the time. I also like to shoot the landscape and will use a kit 18-135 lens for that. I also carry my Oben tripod when I expect low light and still subjects.Feedback
Never give up on any day. Some of us can't always go out at first light on a perfect day. I am constrained to weekends mostly. This image has some key factors. The light was out of my control here, but with the day being so still, I knew that the reflection would be good on images. I didn't have to wait for this shot, but took several shots with different dappled light. I highly recommend Blackwater for Eagles and Herons. I also captured shots of swarming Snow Geese.
