Location
My studio, that doubles as a nice place to have a drink with friends while having a portrait takin. This environment was created for small groups of friends that wouldn't normally go to studios to have their photo taken due to work schedule and being uncomfortable in front of the camera/photographer. So I get them to have a couple drinks before I shoot them while enjoying part of an evening with friendsTime

I've been playing around with this 3 light setup for a whileEquipment
Shot using a Canon 1Dmk4 with Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG, 2 Elinchrome Ranger heads (strip box 48", soft box 24x24" and snoot) hand heldInspiration
I normally refer family portraits to other photographers, main reason being; the challenges a photographer is faced whilst shooting young children, dealing with mood swings and overly active little bodies in my dark and cramped studio is not the best environment. We really see family portraits in this kind of dark and hi contrast setting.Editing
Post is quite simple. I have a thing for TRX400 and Fomapan, hi detail and contrast negatives. I've been playing around lightroom to create a preset that almost mimics the results of those films. Normally its a 2 step edit: apply preset, then adjust luminosity. That's really all there is to itIn my camera bag

Since I know this little girl and her family extremely well, I just let them be a family, with everything that it involves. Shooting active kid with minimal setup and adjustments is a must, knowing your equipment and reacting in a flash is key. One second later this picture wouldn't be what it is.
