Behind The Lens

Location

Anilao in the Philippines, one of the best locations to shoot small stuff I have ever seen. Macro underwater heaven.

Time

Day time

Lighting

To make the colours stand out there was a strobe in backlight and one from the front. Careful to not light the sand behind the subject, wanted a dark background.

Equipment

D7100, Nauticam housing, 2x Inon Z240 Strobes, 105macro lens with wet diopter added to the front for more magnification.

Inspiration

I'd never seen this nudibranch before so I can't say I was inspired to chase this subject down. Never found this before or again after this shot.

Editing

Tweaked the colours, contarst and darkened the background slightly.

In my camera bag

Diving I always have 2 Z240 strobes, a focus light and spare torch in my pocket for an extra back light if needed. Also red light for focusing in the dark and not scaring the fish. My favourite is the 105mm macro get great use from this the 60mm is also great for showing more of the habitat. Sometimes I shoot wide angle and use a dome port on the housing and a 10.5mm or 10-17 fish eye. That at least covers the underwater gear, I am a bit of a gear hound and have a bunch of above water gear including light stands tripod and more lens. 50mm 1.4 favorite above water.

Feedback

Learn scuba would be a great start! More than that you need to control your breathing so you are dead still in the water. You can't use a tripod in most cases underwater so it's tricky to land the focus sometimes. Exercise patience(some of my best images took hours and return visits to the same site), nail the exposure in camera and experiment with lighting from different directions.
