These batfish followed me for about 30minutes today. They numbered 50+ were curious and playful, following me, swooping close to the camera and maneuvering near my fins. Made the dive so much fun.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was image was shot at Wakatobi Dive Resort at a dive site call Waitii Ridge. It's basically a pinnacle under the ocean about 10minutes by boat from the resort.

Time

It was an afternoon dive on my day off, about 3:30pm. Always diving when I get the chance.

Lighting

This image is mostly natural light, normally I would use a strobe to light the fish at the front. This day I substituted a focus light with a diffuser as I had run out of batteries!

Equipment

Cannon S100 Focus Light with a diffuser Ikelite housing

Inspiration

This was just an inspiring dive, the bat fish followed me for the whole dive. The reef is always beautiful but these fish captured my attention and held it the whole time I was in the water. They swooped in front of the camera. Chased me when I sped up and seemed curious and playful. Took multiple images and some video of them getting a clean factory style one after another parking in front of the cleaner wrasse(small cleaner fish). Interestingly fish can change colour one time they do this is when they come to a cleaning station. They change to almost pure white to indicate the cleaner fish are safe to start cleaning.

Editing

Tweaked the raw file and converted to B&W using CS6. Slight adjustment to the histogram to get the look I wanted and I may have removed a dust spot or two.

In my camera bag

Feedback

Go diving, this was a once in a year maybe opportunity. You never know what you might see under the water. Dive the same sites again and again, if you know a little about fish behavior it will help you get more interesting images.
