Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Capital Lake in Olympia, Washington. I had rented some equipment and needed to return it that night. I went for a drive and saw this perfect dock.

Time

This was taken at dusk turning into early night time. There was a small gazebo with a light on behind me.

Lighting

Dusk made for a dramatic image. The light on the gazebo behind me, hung above and behind me, made it possible to keep the night atmosphere and still get foreground light.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D mark ii with a 16-35mm wide angle lens, tripod, and a remote shutter

Inspiration

I have always admired wooden dock pictures looking over calm water. Driving around my local area I saw this dock and no one around. Everything just fell into place.

Editing

This is one image. I adjusted a bit for color and exposure. Lightened the dock as it got closer to the water. But really the editing was minimal.

In my camera bag

I always have two lenses, my 16-35mm wide angle and my 24-70mm zoom. Can really get anything I want between those two and each are as easy to use as it gets. I have been shooting with the Canon 7d mark ii which I absolutely love. I am an avid fan of long exposures lately so I always have a remote shutter and tripod on hand as well.

Feedback

Don't over think. I am always over thinking and usually don't get the shot I want because of it. This shot came on a whim. I wasn't particularly thinking of lighting, just the subject that I wanted. Take multiple angles and the one you didn't suspect would work will probably be the one you like the best.
