Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken indoors in my room during the afternoon hours.

Time

The photograph was probably taken during the afternoon hours of the day.

Lighting

I had taken the flower photograph indoors during the afternoon hours of the day. I had placed the hibiscus flower on a dark glass table so as to form the dark background for the shot. The only light source used while taking the shot was that of the faint natural light coming through the window beside the table and falling on to the flower so as to give a natural backlit glow on the petals.

Equipment

The flower shot was taken with my Nikon D5100 along with the Nikkor 18-55 mm AFS DX kit lens.No filters or other artificial light sources were used while taking the photograph

Inspiration

Of late, I had been taking a lot of flower photographs outdoors under natural sunlight. While most of the shots looked pretty average, I had tried some new ways to shot the same flowers in my garden indoors while giving a soft ambience while taking the shots. I too looked for some different perspective while taking the shots and looking on the net as to how to give a fine art type of look to a flower shot. Hence, I tried with some type of combinations and finally came up with this particular flower shot.

Editing

Yes, I do some bit of normal post processing in Adobe Photoshop CS 6 to the RAW image file. I had first of all done some normal exposure, color, sharpness, clarity etc etc adjustments to the RAW image in Adobe camera Raw 7.1 and then some simple blur corrections in CS6. There were a lot of different ideas as to how to bring a soft natural backlight on the petals of the flower and while experimenting with various set of workflow, finally I came up with the particular flower image.

In my camera bag

Normally, I don't carry a lot of camera gear while shooting. I use Nikon D5100 camera body along with the standard kit lens Nikkor 18 -55 mm AFS-DX and the popular Nikkor 50mm/1.8G. While shooting landscapes, I also use a 58mm Hoya CPL filter.

Feedback

There are a whole lot of different techniques and ways as of how to shot beautiful close up shots of flowers. While shooting flowers, micro lenses can be very helpful in bringing out the very fine details.I experimented with some random shots and then finally came up with the idea to shoot the hibiscus flower in my room. I used the spot metering mode with a large aperture of about 5.6 so as to concentrate the faint light glow to the petals of the flower and not to the surroundings.Likewise, more practice with the same set up of equipments with a different perspective shall result in even more beautiful photos.
