While his friends were playing, this particular guy was sitting by the glass in the enclosure, staring into space. At first I thought his pose was comical when he rested his arm atop the ball. But when I looked into his eyes, I saw a look of resignation: stark acceptance of his fate in captivity. It actually broke my heart to see his expression. This image reminds me of Edwin Markham's poem "The Man With The Hoe". Like the subject in the poem, this gorilla felt the hopelessness of it all.
