Sunday, Nov 1st, was one of the best mornings of photography I've ever had. It started out at Derwentwater with the mist and fog adding atmosphere, the sky hinting at a sunrise, bringing out those deep tones in the hull of the boat.

Location
This photo was taken on the shores of Derwentwater in the Lake District, UK. One of the largest lakes, there are may different vantage points, each unique.Time
I'm an early riser and find this is the best time of the day to shoot landscapes, especially in the autumn when the transition between seasons brings mist and atmosphere if you're lucky. This was taken just before the sun rose, the muted colours of dawn still prevalent and the water still, reflecting the image of the boat and the trees behind.Lighting
Pre-dawn light can be particular ethereal, and in this scene it complimented the wood veneer of the boat.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon 5D Mk III + 24-70mm f/2.8 on a Three Legged Thing tripod. I used a Lee Filters 0.9 ND Soft Grad and Circular Polariser.Inspiration
Autumn is my favourite season and I spend as much time as possible out and about, shooting the landscape. On this particular morning I wanted to capture the stillness of the harbour at sunrise. When I arrived, the water was still enough to achieve my objective, and the boat was in the perfect position. This was one of those mornings where everything goes right, and I remained outdoors long past breakfast, taking in the marvellous light.Editing
As with every image, it's been tidied up and brightened. I've brought out the contrast and the colours of both the boat and the autumn foliage behind. This image suited a more high-key approach to editing and I cropped the image so that the lines of the pier worked against the rest of the image. In my camera bag
I tend to pack a fair amount of kit, just in case it's needed. I almost always carry my 5D Mk III body & workhorse 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I also carry the 85mm 1.2, 100mm Macro & 70-200 f/4 IS. Recently I've been testing the Fujifilm X-T2, so that's been in my bag with the 50-140mm f/2.8. New additions include a Gitzo tripod and a Phantom 4 drone. I swear I used to be taller than I am now...Feedback
Get to your location early so you can be sure you have the right composition. You don't want to miss the best of the light. Use your phone to try out different compositions; it'll help you focus and mean you aren't exerting huge amounts of energy moving your tripod around. Be mindful of the light, it changes second on second at this time of the morning, so what works one moment might change in the next and a slightest adjustment of settings and composition can make all of the difference.
