I tried to get the early morning freshness on the new leaves. I drove quite a distance to arrive before sunrise at this spot. I was very lucky to get some clouds in the sky to balance my composition.

The photo was taken in the Cape Wine-lands near my home town: Stellenbosch, South Africa. I am a professional Landscape photographer. My usual style of shooting is to use lines or interesting foregrounds. Every shot I take is planned and then I would wait for the right condition to get the best possible shot.Time
This is one of my favourite images. I had a look at the weather report the previous evening. It was still raining that evening. The forecast predicted minor clouds with no rain. When i woke up hours before dawn, the skies was overcast on my side of the mountain. I still decided to take that chance that the weather predictions could differ on the other side of the mountain. I jumped in my car and drove to the closest spot I could. Dawn was approaching and i had to hurry, I wanted to shoot the image as the first light rays lit up the vineyards. I had a good distance to hike in the cold up the hill. I nearly thought I wasn’t going to make it up the steep hill. Luckily for me as the light broke through it did not light up the scene as I have predicted. It gave me a chance to get my breath back and set up the tripod at the best possible angle. While waiting for the perfect light, the thoughts that ran trough my mind was: “How refreshing everything looked after the cold front has passed”. I waited approximately 30min after sunrise to photograph the scene.Lighting
I wanted the image to look fresh especially since the vines had sprouted their new leaves about 2 weeks before. This image was taken approximately half hour after sunrise early in November 6h30am, ZAR time. No filters was used, only natural light.Equipment
This shot was taken with a film camera: one of the Canon EOS range. Velvia 50 ASA professional Fuji film was used. A 28mm f22 lens was used as well as a tripot and a shutter realease cable.Inspiration
I spotted this image while on an assignment to photograph something totally different. I new there and then that I wanted to capture this image since no other photographer has photographed this scene before. It was refreshing to me and my way of sharing the beauty of nature to all in the best possible natural conditions.Editing
This image was taken on slide film and chemically processed. A high end Drum Scanner was used to digitalise the image. The image was retouched in photoshop by cleaning the dust. The curves were used to add contrast and white balance. In my camera bag
These days I use a Canon 5DmarkIII, 28-105mm f4/L IS USM and a 16-35mm f4/L IS USM. A tripod No filters 580EX Canon FlashFeedback
Never leave your camera behind. I find that when finding a spot to return at a later stage when the conditions are right. Wind, tides and weather plays a big role in photography. Plan your shot ahead and be patient and ready. The right light can come in a split second or in an hour’s time. Don’t leave your spot, you might miss the winning shot you had hoped for.
