Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the famous Portland Head Lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

Time

This picture is the first one that I took on my way to Acadia National Park. I decided to go to this iconic location before driving further north to reach my destination at Bar Harbor, Maine. Immediately after landing I headed towards the lighthouse only to find that the light was really flat by the time I arrived. So I decided to do a long exposure to compensate for that. This was taken on September 22, 2015 at 2:56 PM.

Lighting

Since the light was flat, I went for a long exposure of 90 seconds. That gave the waves a kind of silky texture and also, the photo looks dramatic and mysterious.

Equipment

This was shot using a Nikon D700 with a 24-70 f/ 2.8 lens at 35mm. I also used an Induro tripod with a Really Right Stuff ballhead.

Inspiration

I always wanted to photograph this lighthouse, I mean, it is the most photographed lighthouse in the United States! Upon arrival I found myself among 20 to 30 other photographers. I wanted to take home the beauty of this place but also, wanted something a little different. So I wondered away from the crowd to look for a different composition and to give it a personal touch. At the end it was all worth it!

Editing

Landscape photography requires post processing and this image is not the exception. First, I did a black and white conversion using Silver Effects from Nik, dodge and burn selectively using luminosity masks and finally I added a vignette to draw the attention towards the center of the image.

In my camera bag

I have to main bodies: a Nikon D800 and a D700. For lenses I carry a 24-70 and a 70-200, both 2.8 lenses. I also carry a variety of filters like circular polarizers and neutral density. My tripod setup consists of heavy Induro aluminum legs and a BH-40 ballhead from Really Right Stuff.

Feedback

BE PREPARED I can’t recall the number of times I’ve been in a perfect spot to capture an image, but had my camera in my bag. Or on the wrong settings. Some shot opportunities only last a few seconds, and if you don’t have your camera in your hand you may miss it. I’m constantly adjusting the exposure to fit what I’m shooting so I can be ready when the opportunity arrives.
