Behind The Lens

Location

Caught this particularly stunning lightshow over one of the southern holes of the beautiful Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego California. Id successfully dodged course managers and errant drives to make it all the way out to the southernmost end of the course, and was pleasently surprised as he majority of golfers chose to retire to the club house rather than golfing theough sunset, leaving me with the serenity of the abandoned green all to mysef. Coincidentally, I shared the final image with the courses manager and was invited back to shoot further.

Time

this was taken during the summer sunset, around 7pm

Lighting

the texture of the clouds overhead reflected warm light everywhere, lending a vibrance to everything within sight.

Equipment

I used my mainstay landscape setup, a canon 6d with a rokinon 14mm and a slik tripod.

Inspiration

Honestly, this shot came from an interest in commercial applications for my work. I had hoped to market this image to the course itself and local golfers.

Editing

my processing for this image was very minimal - i am not stranger to full manipulations, sky swaps, color painting - but this image remains very true to what was actualy seen by the human eye. basic adjustments to sharpening and saturation in lightroom rendered this very true to life.

In my camera bag

ive recently reconsidered this - but i typically carry a canon 6d, canon 100mm and ringlight for macro and portraits, a rokinon 14mm for landscape, a tamron 70-200 for longer work, and a slew of extra batteries, flashlights, etc - doing a lot with a little, using relatively cheap gear. recently though ive been finding myself in some precarious positions to get my seascape shots and have almost been dunked under the surf or dashed against the rocks by incoming tides - bag and all - while trying to get out after sunset. i may start traveling a little lighter.

Feedback

overhead cloud cover is a must - the more texture in the sky the better. you are aiming for a semi-solid cieling of clouds up higher in the sky - and if you are shooting in san diego you are looking for this in combination with a minimal marine layer (the dense marine layer fog in san diego often onscures the horizon and puts a damper on the light. When these conditions line up, you are in for some stunning lightshows in southern california.
