This shot was the result of a lot of planning, more than a little luck, and some crampon-assisted effort over a few miles of ice in the lava fields of northern Iceland last winter.Time
I believe I shot this a little after 2 in the morning. I was on location all night long.Lighting
Always bring a speedlight! I typically don't add any artificial light to my landscapes but while setting up a timelapse on of my partners on this adventure started testing his lights on the far side of the arch, momentarily illuminating one side of the arch. I asked him to do it again and loved the effect, so I had him fire it off from a few different angles to brighten up my exposure and show off the arch.Equipment

In the months leading up to this 17 day Iceland trip I had done a lot of research and planning, and had mostly ruled out the north as being too inhospitable due to winter weather. Everything changed as soon as I landed and started looking at the weather patterns. Myself and my fellow photographer on the trip, Noel Marcantel, started sitting down every night to review weather forecasts and started chasing holes in the storms in search of auroras each night sometimes driving as far as to go from the very northwest corner to the very southeast. We found ourselves in the middle of the north one night and after reading about "Dimmuborgir" and its violently created volcanic terrain ,as well as the local legends of the angry homicidal trolls who inhabited its lava fields, we knew we had to go and see it.Editing
Yes. Being limited to only one speedlight, and having to shoot wide open to catch the sky I needed to shoot several exposures and focus blend for the aurora and the foreground and to get some of the light painting right.In my camera bag
I travel way too heavy. On this night, I had two bodies, an emotimo tb3 and rhino slider for timelapse, a whole range of lenses, two tripods, and a speedlight. I think my favorite addition on this trip was my jetboil though - as a hot meal and some coffee served to extend the length of time everyone was willing to stay pretty significantly.Feedback
Plan for the weather, bring the right survival and traction gear, and then go do something that others aren't willing to. For me, its all about getting to see something that others haven't seen before, or that hasn't been photographed a million times already. Adventure and find something new.
