Location
This photo was taken from the south end of the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, CA. On the west this hill drops off to a sharp cliff overlooking the pacific for sunset and to the east it overlooks San diego with sweeping views over Coronado.Time
I initially set out seeking a sunset shot as my annual memorial day tribute. The rough weather creeping in off the coast smothered the light pretty thoroughly but set up the dramatic stormy conditions that gave this shot its mood.Lighting
The encroaching storm clouds turned the whole sky into a moody softbox, allowing the headstones to light up and give contrast to the dark clouds overhead.Equipment
Shot with a canon 6d and 70-200 f/2.8 from my driverside window, propped on the doorframe of my car. was driving by and saw this view and had to hit the breaks and shoot it.Inspiration
While photography is my full time passion, my full time career is as a Marine Corps Officer. Each year on memorial day I try to find something to shoot that both reminds me - and allows me to bring the attention of others to the sacrifices of those that went before us, thus the name of this shot "Until Valhalla"Editing
Yes, I originally shot this in color with a rather flat contrast. De-saturated it and when back in to dodge and burn and bring out the somber but turbulent and defiant mood that I was trying to convey via the storm and the flag whipping in the wind.In my camera bag
I regretfully must admit that I carry way too much gear around. I currently keep a canon 6d with a canon 70-200 2.8, canon 300 f4 with extender, canon 24-70 2.8, canon 16-35, rokinon 24 1.4, rokinon 14mm 2.8 and benro tripod with ballhead packed all the time. On weekends I bring out a drone and a timelapse slider with an emotimo tb3 3 axis head. What can i say, I like my toys.Feedback
Shoot something that resonates with you personally and makes you feel something. Find somewhere to go that makes you feel or think -- and if a storm rolls in dont pack up shop for the day, race down to your spot and catch the sky as the rain rolls in. (Living in San Diego certainly helps too. Miles of beauty to see all along the coast.)
