This photo was taken in my home studio, where i do most of my photos. Luckily my house came equipped with a 40 sq. m room that i quickly claimed as my own photo studio, when buying it with my wife.Time
This was actually taken late in the evening. The model came 1,5 late as he was on kids patrol at his home. This was one of the first images i took of him, where he was just warming up his muscles.Lighting
With a body like this, i already knew that i had to use rim lighting to emphasize his muscle structure as well as adding some mystique to the image. For fill light, i used a beauty dish in a 45 degree angle, slightly to the right of him, to make sure it wasn't all symmetric.Equipment
I used my trusty Nikon D600, with a Tamron 24-70mm, 2.8... For lighting, i used 3 Bowens Gemini 500 equipped with rim lights and a beauty dish. I rarely use tripod in my studio, as i like to go back and forward to the subject. Occasionally, when i shoot in natural light, i might use a monopod. But i like to roam the studio.Inspiration
This was my second shoot with this model. First time was mere practice and produced some very cool pictures. I got something similar on the first shoot, but knew that i could perfect it. So i did, in the 2nd shoot.Editing
I'm huge fan of black and white photography and tends to make my portraits rather contrast looking. Besides the BW convertion, I also dodged and burned his muscles to emphasize his muscles. I then added a bit of grain and noise in the image. Finally, and most important, the cropping. The original image was almost full figure. I decided to go with a different cropping, than i would normally take and instantly fell in love with it. I got a lot of slack in various online fora for not complying with the 'golden rules of photography'. If you ask me "rules are meant to be broken". Especially in photography. In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D600 and just got myself a Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART... It's an absolute dream lens. The sharpness is out of this world. Since i got it, it hasn't come off. I also carry my Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 as well as a hoodman, to check my pictures in bright sunlight. And lots of batteries of course.Feedback
Get someone in the studio who is well cut, muscle wise. You will be amazed how 'easy' it is to get good pictures of an athlete like this. Play around with rim lights and have the model bring some weights that he can tone his muscles with before and during the shoot. Even use them as props. Have fun. If the photographer is happy and having fun, the model will loosen up and your images will be so much better...
