Behind The Lens

Location

I was in the midst of working 7-5 at my regular job and a full time class schedule working toward my MBA degree. My hours of operation were, as you can imagine, late nights, deep in my studies. I would sit on the couch with my laptop on my lap banging away at one of the many term papers that I had to do and my newest addition to the family was a little grey kitten with a little caramel drop on the tip top of her head. She was a misfit from the beginning; a survivor and a budding entrepreneur of mischief. But, when she had run herself to exhaustion, she would snuggle in and take the classic cat nap. She had a problem with the fact that my computer occupied the warm lap space that she desired, however, and decided that by lying across the computer, she would make it terribly difficult for me to continue to be productive, giving her a chance that I would surrender the computer’s lap space to her for a spell. Well, it was a very slim chance due to the timetables I would have to meet but I would gently move her over to the side of the computer where she would lay her head on the edge...just to stake her claim. Passing out cold, she layed there like an angel. I reached over and grabbed my camera, reaching and stretching, wrenching my elbow for a good frame and took about 10 pictures without even looking in the view finder, finally getting the ‘purrrfect’ shot.

Time

This was taken between midnight and 2am.

Lighting

Sometimes luck is your only chip and in this case I won my hand. I wasn’t able to manage the lighting for this shot as it was taken blindly.

Equipment

I used a Canon 50D, a Canon Zoom 18-200mm Lens, no flash, no tripod, a wrenched elbow and a prayer!

Inspiration

You know, art in any form is creative and whether you are sitting late at night reading a book when a big grasshopper hits the screen or you you are framing up a renowned landscape at Yosemite National Park, you have to just pick up that camera and start shooting. Sometimes you have time to think about it but other times you just see the fuzzy face of a sleeping kitten and you make it happen. Either way, to capture the essence of whatever it is that gets your attention; THAT IS the inspiration!

Editing

I utilize Lightroom for post processing and it’s usually to correct exposure issues and noise. I also love B/W photos so I will often remove the saturation and tweaking the clarity.

In my camera bag

I now use a Canon 5D Mark III and will typically use a canon zoom lens, wide angle lens or a fixed 100mm or 50mm lens when shooting. Extra batteries goes without saying and a tripod is always strapped to the side of my bag.

Feedback

My advise is to always be ready!! Be ready to frame a shot anytime and anywhere. There is so much that can be captured and shared, from macros of intricate details to ‘the big picture’ scenarios that tell a story!
