"All streams flow to the sea because it is lower than they are. Humility gives it its power. If you want to govern the people, you must place yourself below them. If you want to lead the people, you must learn how to follow them."

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a small village called Xiao Zhou Cun, in Guangzhou, China or simply Xiaozhou Village.

Time

It was about 10am, but very few people were there that day. The tide was low, so many scenes in the village had mud instead of water.

Lighting

I wanted to feature the detail in the trees, but I wasn't able to take the picture without over exposing the center, so I decided to make this an HDR.

Equipment

I used a sony alpha 300 with a sigma lens and a tripod. This was a manual HDR

Inspiration

The rose peddles on the ground were left over from a previous wedding ceremony that morning. The tree represents two people supporting each other through love. So it was apropos to take it with peddles.

Editing

I used Photoshop to blend the images. I simply took about 5 photographs of varying shutter speeds then placed them in a folder, opened them photoshop, went to File then Automate, then I selected "Merge to HDR Pro..." Photoshop pretty much just does the rest.

In my camera bag

I'm somewhat of a minimalist anyway, but since I was walking around with a group, I had to carry around a 10 lb. tripod. Not fun, but worth the image, I think.

Feedback

Find out if you can bracket photos with the automatic settings on your camera. HDRs shouldn't have have over saturated colors or non-existent shadows. You can make them look ultra natural, as the eyes see it, if you dont over do the shadow brightness. However, this photo was an exception because the shadows were especially harsh.
