"When things are investigated, then true knowledge is achieved; when true knowledge is achieved, then the will becomes sincere; when the will is sincere, then the heart is set right; when the heart is set right, the personal life is cultivated; when the personal life is cultivated, then the family life is regulated; when the family life is regulated, then the national life is orderly; and when the national life is orderly, there is peace in the world."

Behind The Lens

Location

This was a long exposure I took in Guangzhou, near Sun Yat-Sen University in June of 2011. I didn't have a tripod, so I just used the dock post.

Time

This was just after getting off of a miniature cruise line. As always, classmates were in a hurry to our next destination, so I'm surprised the shoot turned out so well.

Lighting

A helpful technique with multiple light sources is to use Lightroom and boost saturation and vibrance up to 100%, then adjust the G/M and B/Y until they're balanced, then bring the saturation back down to normal. This way, you'll have the most true color to the scene. Whites will be pure white.

Equipment

No tripod. Just a Sony a300.

Inspiration

Being in China for the first time was inspiring enough. I probably took more than 10,000 pictures that summer.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom CS6 several years down the road and reduced the noise a little and

In my camera bag

I'm as minimalist as you can get. Usually, I just carry my camera in my hand with the lens it has on it.

Feedback

Photography is about the timing. Sometimes, it you just wait until sunset or the blue hour, you'll find the scene is lit perfectly for an award winning photo.
