Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken outside my home in South Wales.

Time

It was about 12.30am and I couldn't sleep.

Lighting

The lighting was provided by a torch as when I tried to take the photo with the built-in flash on the camera it bleached out a lot of the details because I was quite close to the subject.

Equipment

Camera - Sony DSC - HX7V compact camera (handheld) Lighting - LED torch

Inspiration

There were two raised flowerbeds outside, one of which was rather overrun with weeds and brambles. I had gone outside to take some night photos of yellow tulips that were growing next door to me, when I spotted this dandelion seedhead which hadn't completely opened out. Most photos of dandelions are taken when they are fully out and the head is fluffy, but I liked the more angular look of this, and it seemed to stand out well against the darkness of the background.

Editing

I did very little post- processing other than to sharpen the image and adjust the contrast a little using Lightroom. I had considered Photoshopping the green leaves out of the background, but decided to leave them.

In my camera bag

I don't have any equipment that I habitually carry with me as I have a number of different cameras that I use depending on my mood, but I always carry a compact camera wherever I go in case I spot something interesting as although I have a decent camera on my phone I am not able to make the variety of setting adjustment to it, which I can with a compact.

Feedback

I think that the only tip I can offer is that even if you go out with a specific subject in mind (in this case the yellow tulips) you ashould always have a good look around to see if there is anything else that might make an equally good subject.
