Behind The Lens
Location
We picked up our new Labrador puppy Lola that day and brought her home. She was a little shy until she got to know the kids and this spot under a wooden bench was her favourite refuge.Time
Its a midday shotLighting
The shot was taken in a conservatory room with lots of natural daylight spilling down onto a cream coloured tiled floor so lots of up light was involved too. With Lola sitting under the bench she was in shade but the reflection from the tiles gave her a sweet uplit effect against a darker shadowed background.Equipment
Shot on a Sony A7, natural light, kit lens (28-70).Inspiration
Puppy shots are very common and many of them are cute. Capturing the "story here was the goal - timid puppy, day one at home, taking refuge under a bench with nice lighting.Editing
I used Lightroom to covert this shot to a black and white with medium contrast. In my camera bag
Today, I have two Sony Alphas - A7riii and A7sii. I still use the kit lens but my favourite lens is the Sony 55mm 1.8 which goes everywhere with me. This along with a 16-35 zoom and a 70-200 zoom. The airbrush is a must along with a ten-stop ND filter.Feedback
Get low. Use natural light. Tell a story. Keep the scene simple. Shoot multiple frames a second if possible and keep at it till you get what you want.
