I was on a media trip to St. Simons Island in Georgia. I love the beach and walk it as often as I can. Call it Zen for this soul. I was taking pictures along the beach in front of The King and Prince Resort.Time
I took this photo just as the sun was coming up over the horizon. I was watching all of the runners along the beach and purposely waited for this runner to pass through the gorgeous orb of sunshine that was reflected on the water and sand.Lighting
The lighting was amazing. I loved the orange hues and the promise of a new day. Capturing the silhouette of the runner was exciting. It made me think of conceptual images and how they can mean something different to every person who views them.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon, 18-135mm lens, no flash, no tripod.Inspiration
I just love the simplicity of taking sunrise/sunset photos at times. Especially when I am near the water. Sunrise photographs are so full of promise, hope, and joy in the new day ahead of me. I myself am not a runner, but so many of my friends are and I was thinking of them when I took the photo. I was just starting out as a travel photographer/travel writer and thought about how bright my future was in choosing this new career.Editing
The only thing I use to post-process is the auto-contrast button on Picasa. In this case, I used nothing. I framed the image before I pressed the shutter button - making sure there was nothing distracting in the image. So, no cropping either. The sunrise was really that gorgeous. Sometimes you luck out and mother nature steals the show and lets you capture a moment. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon - right now it is a 60D and a Rebel T6. I carry a 40mm fixed, a 18-55mm and a 18-135. Sometimes I will switch it up, ditch the 40mm and carry my 55-250mm for the day. I try to plan it out, but one time I really NEEDED the 40mm and did not have it. Made me sad.Feedback
When you are at the beach, you need to have a boat-load of patience. You can snap a gazillion photos hoping for the perfect moment - but if you just wait, it comes. Think about what you are trying to say. If you had to tell your story with photos and weren't able to utter a single word that might help clarify things, I bet you'd take your time then. Think about different angles - shoot high, shoot low, lay down on the sandy beach, stand on a rock. Also, and so important I think, take horizontal and vertical shots - I have landed magazine cover photos because I thought to capture both.
