I adore the symbolism of the pier in dreams and in all forms of art. The obvious, of course, is the pier as refuge, a place to gather your strength and prepare before your journey to the unknown. But there's more to it: the pier (especially when you stand on it) also symbolizes your will to explore your unconscious, to dig deep to the most secret aspects of your psyche.
