Location
This photo was taken in the diminutive Bulgarian village of Yamna, located in the southern skirts of the Balkan mountain range. We were inspired to visit this distant semiabandoned place, because of the low amount of light pollution and amazing nature.Time
The feeling when I was creating this image was unforgettable. Back in the day, it was the rise of my photography career and the supermoon was my chance to settle down in the elite photography communities in Bulgaria. After me and my team had devoted some time to explore the map, the perfect day and time were settled. Our camp was built far enough from the film set, so no light could reach us. We were blessed with a dark night and a clear sky. Even the fact it was a chilling summer night, the waiting for the moon to appear behind the mountain ridge was a true pleasure. The photo was taken on 12/07/2014 22:17.Lighting
This type of photography is known for its high dynamic range. To keep the balance between the darkest and the brightest areas, I had to shoot it in a series of three different exposures.Equipment
The shot was made using Nikon D90 with NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR and it was stabilized using a tripod.Inspiration
I have always been fascinated by the moon so I have spent hours just watching it and imagining stories, how all these amazing craters have formed. I was dreaming to be one of those explorers who share their fascination with the world, by helping the human eye to see the details that remain hidden from it.Editing
Night photography has a lot of post-processing in it. As I mentioned above, to capture the dark and light areas in the landscape and blend them into the mid-tones, I took three shots with different exposures. In the post-processing, I had to edit each frame separately and stack them afterwards. The white balance was custom set, but it was constant for three of them which made the stacking and blending process possible. This technique helped reduce noise to a minimum. When there is a moon on the sky, the stars are not visible anymore so to give the shot that final look they were post-processed from a different picture. In my camera bag
As a travel photographer, I have to always be prepared for any situations that might appear. Currently, in my backpack (Hama Daytour 230), I have my main body Nikon D750 with Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR and my second body Nikon D90, which may sound antique to you, but for me is one of the best and most durable Nikon bodies with Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR attached on it. I always carry with me a full set of filters, extra batteries, SD cards, cardholders, cleaning tissue and accessories, a headlamp, a flashlight, a bottle of water and a 30m paracord when things get risky. Most of the time I have my Yongnuo Speedlight with a diffuser, a 5 in 1 circular reflector, a Speedlight synchronizer and an action camera. Of course, I carry with me my main tripod and a small one for the low point of view, and a monopode for the places where the tripod is inconvenient or banned. Depending on the situation, I may have climbing, sailing or caving gear with me as well.Feedback
Bulgaria is famous for its mountain ranges where the weather changes fast. Always be well prepared and have with you an umbrella, be patient, and watch the weather forecast before going on an adventure. The mood reflects on your pictures, so always stay positive and have fun. You may get it on the first try but never give up if you don't.
